Update on Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 Flu
In the last few months, Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 Flu has affected individuals across the United States and in more than 70 countries. H1N1 has symptoms similar to the general flu including fever, coughing, sneezing, sore throat, body aches, headaches, chills and fatigue. Many people have also reported nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
The World Health Organization (WHO) raised the worldwide pandemic to Level 6 on June 11th. Although there have been a few deaths from Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 Flu, the pandemic level was raised because of the spread of the disease, not the severity. Most people who become ill have not required treatment.
As with any flu, everyone should take these everyday steps to protect your health and lessen the spread of this new virus:
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
- Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
- If you are sick with a flu-like illness, stay home for 7 days after your symptoms begin or until you have been symptom-free for 24 hours, whichever is longer. This is to keep from infecting others and spreading the virus further.
- Follow public health advice regarding school closures, avoiding crowds and other social distancing measures.
The spread of Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 Flu has occurred largely during the summer months. Officials are worried about what will happen come winter, the typical flu season. Vista Community Clinic is staying abreast of developments with the
World Health Organization, Center for Disease Control and other public health organizations.
