Duties and Responsibilities
- Direct and provide outpatient care to clinic patients including physical examinations, making diagnoses, determining course of treatment, providing and supervising appropriate treatment, prescribing medications and documenting patient files.
- Conduct well physical exams
- Administer therapeutic procedures such as injections, immunizations, suturing and wound care
- Promote healthy living through diet, hygiene and disease prevention
- Order and interpret labs and diagnostic images
- Perform surgical procedures when appropriate for specialty and training
- Generate patient referrals for medical and consulting care

Job Summary
Provide direct therapeutic services to clients: individuals, couples, family and group counseling. Provide resource and referral information as needed for comprehensive treatment.
Essential Job Functions
- Primary duty requires the exercise of discretion and independent judgment with respect to matters of significance
- Complete intake assessments, treatment plans, documentation, progress notes, and case management according to established legal and ethical codes and in compliance with contracting agencies
- Provide crisis intervention services to clients via phone or for walk-ins as needed
- Provide resources and referral information to clients and link to outside agencies
- Participate as a member of the Case Review Team in reviewing client cases
- Participate in QA activities and audits. Review protocols on schedule basis
- Provide progress updates to outside authorities including but not limited to social services and probation as required

Support clinicians, nurses and other professional, licensed specialists by taking vitals, assisting in medical examinations and other specific procedures. Provide translation services.
Essential Job Functions
- Prepare patients for examination and assist clinicians with the examination and/or procedure
- Take vital signs, height and weight of patients; plot growth charts; record immunizations
- Apply and remove bandages and dressings, orthopedic appliances such as knee immobilizers, envelope slings, orthotics and similar devices and assist clinicians in cast, splint and orthopedic appliance applications.
- Perform simple laboratory and screening tests customarily performed in a medical office such as visual acuity, audiometric screening, Snellen tests, spirometry tests and EKG’s
- Set up room and appropriate instrument trays for special procedures
- Give counseling, care and follow-up instructions, health education and materials to patients as instructed by clinician
- Provide confidential, culturally sensitive and appropriate language translation for clinician and patient
- Administer intramuscular, subcutaneous and intra-dermal injections, perform skin tests and venipuncture for purposes of withdrawing blood under the direct supervision of the clinician
- Wash, wrap and autoclave instruments according to guidelines; prepare disposable and infectious waste for appropriate disposal
- Maintain electronic patient records and charges to ensure completeness and accuracy of information; complete appropriate electronic forms as required for the patient’s medical treatment, including radiology and laboratory slips and referrals based on clinicians findings
- Assist in minor surgery and other specialty surgical and medical procedures only under the direct supervision of the clinician
- Perform basic lab tests as needed (i.e. pregnancy, dipstix, rapid strep, etc)

Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time; ability to reach, bend, climb and stoop. Ability to lift and carry up to 30 lbs. for routine performance
- Sufficient vision and hearing abilities to observe patients, communicate in person and on the phone, to listen to breathing and pulse as part of examination and treatment, and to view information on a computer monitor for long periods of time
- Manual dexterity and strength sufficient to enter information via computer keyboard for long periods of time, to write notes and information as needed
Under the clinical supervision of the dentist and the administrative supervision of the clinic manager, provide chair side assistance in the concept of four handed dentistry and prepare patients for service delivery.
Essential Job Functions
- Perform a wide variety of patient care activities and assist chair side in the concept of four handed dentistry including but not limited to impressions, applying non-aerosol and topical agents, applying topical fluoride, removing post-extraction and periodontal dressing and sutures, assisting in the administration of nitrous oxide, placing and removing rubber dams, place, wedge, and remove matrices for restorative procedures, cure restorative materials in operative site with light curing device, use automated caries detection devices and materials to gather information for diagnosis by dentist. Application of pit and fissure sealants (must complete course prior to performing function).
- Place temporary sedative dressing, places bases and liners on sound dentin, remove excess cement from supragingival surfaces of teeth with a hand instrument or floss, size stainless steel crowns, temporary crown and bands, fabricate temporary crowns intra-orally, perform temporary cementation and removal of temporary crowns, take bite registrations for diagnostic models for case study only and perform coronal polishing
- Maintain a smooth constant flow of patients from reception to operatories; coordinate the activities of several operatories through proper utilization of time, resources, abilities and patient needs
- Review patient records for accuracy and completeness; explain treatment recommended by the dentist in a manner that is understandable and supportive
- Prepare equipment, instruments, materials and operatories. Perform routine maintenance of equipment and restocking of materials
- Operate x-ray equipment to make complete and/or selective oral radiographic services. Process images and arrange in format as appropriate.
- Coordinate the preparation of reports and written documentation including patient records, as required by the department, agency, state and federal regulatory agents
- Ensure the established infection control techniques are administered in accordance with department policy to maintain a safe and pleasant environment
- Maintain and submit orders to maintain an adequate inventory of forms, consumable dental supplies, equipment maintenance and other supplies as necessary
- Maintain established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards
- Participate in delivery of an integrated oral health program with other agency health services
- Attend meetings as required and participate on committees as directed

Qualifications

- Minimum two years’ experience working as a registered dental assistant in a high volume dental practice
- Operational experience with x-ray machine, sterilizing equipment, ultrasonic equipment, laboratory equipment and other dental practice related equipment
- Must be able to work with various populations whose cultural backgrounds vary
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
- Knowledge of and ability to provide the full range of established dental assistant protocols and processes in connection with treatment of dental diseases and dental health problems of usual difficulty
- Knowledge of professional and ethical standards of health care delivery
- Proven ability to put patients at ease and give clear understandable directions of treatment recommended by dentist
- Skill in the management of “team” dentistry using multiple operatories and multiple auxiliaries
- Ability to provide written and verbal reports and evaluations concerning program activities, accomplishments, goals and objectives
- Knowledge of health care delivery systems and the ability to use that knowledge in assisting clients with accessing necessary health care services
- Knowledge of the operational aspects of Medi-Cal, CHDP, private insurance and government programs which pay for dental services

Working Conditions
- General clinical environment with frequent exposure to patients with infectious diseases, chemicals, blood-borne pathogens, patient body fluids and/or tissue, and physical hazards such as needle sticks
- Fingerprint report must be clear prior to beginning work; fingerprinting includes enrollment in the Department of Justice arrest notification service.
Physical Requirements
- Physical ability must be sufficient to meet standards of care of a quality oriented dental practice
- Long periods of standing, walking, recurrent bending and twisting of body, especially the back and neck
- Risks or discomforts involved in a daily work environment which requires normal safety precautions typical of a clinical dental setting
- Ability to work with Nitrous and other chemicals used in the normal delivery of dental services
- Speaking and hearing ability sufficient to handle phone and in-person conversations with patients/clients, clinicians and other staff
- Visual acuity and reading ability sufficient to effectively read records and documents, and to accurately view information on a computer monitor
