Cold & Flu in the New Year in Southern California
Cold and flu season is in full swing across Southern California, including communities in San Diego and Los Angeles counties. During the winter months, respiratory illnesses spread more easily as people spend more time indoors, large groups gather, and kids return to school.
Right now, several common viruses are circulating. The flu is increasing and often causes sudden symptoms like fever, body aches, tiredness, and cough. RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) is also spreading and can be more serious for babies and older adults, especially when it affects breathing. COVID-19 also continues to circulate at lower levels, and common cold viruses remain a frequent cause of runny noses, sore throats, and mild coughs.
Because many of these illnesses share symptoms, it can be hard to tell them apart. Colds usually start slowly and stay mild. The flu often hits fast and makes people feel very tired and achy. RSV may begin like a cold but can cause wheezing or fast breathing in infants. If symptoms are getting worse or not improving, it’s important to check in with a healthcare provider.
Simple steps can help prevent illness and protect others. Stay up to date on recommended vaccines, wash your hands often, cover coughs and sneezes, and stay home when you are sick. Wearing a mask in crowded indoor spaces can also help reduce the spread of germs.
Most colds and mild flu cases can be treated at home with rest and fluids. However, some symptoms mean it’s time to seek care.
