Healthy Smiles Start Early: Why Pediatric Dental Care Matters

Good oral health starts earlier than many parents realize. In fact, dental experts recommend that children visit the dentist around the time their first tooth appears or by their first birthday, whichever happens first.

At VCC, pediatric dental care focuses on prevention, education, and helping children build healthy habits that can last a lifetime.

“Early dental visits are about much more than checking teeth,” said Dr. Rebecca Cornille, Chief Dental Officer at VCC. “These visits help children become comfortable with dental care while giving parents the tools and support they need to prevent problems before they start.”

Why Early Dental Care Is Important

Tooth decay remains one of the most common chronic conditions among children. Without preventive care, cavities and oral health problems can lead to pain, infection, difficulty eating, and missed school days.

Early dental visits help providers:

  • Monitor healthy tooth development
  • Identify concerns before they become more serious
  • Teach healthy brushing, flossing and nutrition habits
  • Reduce fear and anxiety around dental visits
  • Establish a long-term “dental home” for the child

Starting early also allows children to grow familiar with the dental environment, helping routine visits be positive experiences and less intimidating over time.

At select VCC sites, including Vale Terrace and Lake Elsinore, families can also receive support from VCC’s Pediatric Dental Integrator, a role designed to help make dental care easier to navigate for parents and caregivers.

Beginning around six months of age, the integration coordinator connects with families during pediatric visits to answer questions, discuss the importance of oral health, and help coordinate dental appointments.

“For many families balancing work, school schedules, and everything else life brings, it can be hard to keep up with appointments,” said Juan Lopez, VCC’s Pediatric Dental Integration Coordinator. “We’re here to help simplify the process and make families feel supported, not overwhelmed.”

Early visits are typically brief and focus on prevention and education. Families can also benefit from Saturday appointment availability as well as evening appointment hours at select sites and receive age-appropriate dental care kits to encourage healthy habits at home.

Bringing Dental Care into the Community

In addition to clinic-based care, VCC’s A+ Teeth Program helps bring dental screenings directly to local schools, providing preventive services and helping identify concerns early Our coordinators also connect families with follow-up care when needed and assist in establishing a dental home.

By combining clinic services, school outreach, and family support, VCC aims to make preventive dental care more accessible for children throughout the communities it serves.

Tips for Healthy Smiles at Home

Parents and caregivers can help support good oral health by:

  • Scheduling dental visits early
  • Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste
  • Limiting sugary drinks and snacks
  • Encouraging healthy eating habits
  • Keeping regular six-month dental checkups

“Healthy habits developed during childhood often continue into adulthood,” said Dr. Cornille. “The earlier we start, the better the long-term outcomes can be.”
